Hi! My name is Heather and I am a cheer mom (also a gymnastics mom).
Over the last few years I have noticed that there were a lot of resources for cheerleading in general, but no so many resources for cheer moms. I’m hoping to fill that gap and talk about everything cheer related, especially how to navigate this crazy sport if you’re new to it!
I have been involved in competitive cheer since 1996. My first all star team was at a local gymnastics gym. I went reluctantly and fell in love with the sport. I did sideline cheer for my high school, All stars, College club cheer and Open all star.. All before 2003, when the world of competitive cheer changed forever.
I have been lucky enough to not only be an athlete, but to also be a coach, a program director and now a cheer mom.
My son decided back in 2015 that he wanted to join all star cheer. I was coaching at a local gym and he used to come to practice with me. He was placed on a Tiny level 1 team. Sadly that gym closed at the end of the summer and I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. Going to competitions pregnant really didn’t appeal to me, so I told him we would do tumbling classes until the next season. He did not forget, and tried out for his first team a week or two before I gave birth.
At that point, I had no experience as a “cheer mom” but I did have all of my coaching experience.. You would think that should have been enough.. but let me tell you… Nothing prepares you for being on the other side of the wall. I’ve learned a lot over the years and I really am hoping to put together a blog that will help the new moms/dads understand and navigate the incredible sport of cheer!
Until next time…..
Heather
